East Helena is reaching a big milestone in its effort to clean up the environment after the shutdown of the ASARCO Smelter in 2001 left contaminated water and soil behind.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Montana Environmental Trust Group hosted a public meeting to update the community about the work that has been done to fix issues like poor groundwater quality that are the result of arsenic and selenium from the smelter.

A draft Corrective Measures Study, known as the CMS, was released and is among the final steps in the documentation of the cleanup process, though maintenance on the site will be required into perpetuity.
