WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS NAVASSA SUPERFUND SITE THIS WEEKEND

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — The process of cleaning up the Kerr-McGee Superfund Site in Navassa has been in the works for years.

During those years, there has been dozens of meetings to get input on what residents would like to see in the area.

“It’s been taking a long time because of the complex history of how the site is being managed,” EPA Remedial Project Manager, Erik Spalvins said.

For years, the Multistate Trust, Environmental Protection Agency, and NC Department of Environmental Quality have been working to redevelop the Superfund Site.

Now the Multistate Trust is hosting a Community Visioning Workshop to get more input on what people want to see developed.

“A natural reserve with maybe a cultural center on it,” Project Manager, Richard Elliott said. “All the way to there are people in town that are very interested in getting, you know, high paying jobs and producing a tax base for the community. Which kind of implies a commercial or even industrial type development.”
